Choosing a Fireplace

Fireplaces provide a comfortable gathering place for family and friends, they provide heat and light and they make a room look beautiful.

That is why it is important to have the right fireplace design for your home.

Choosing the right fireplace design and product is key to ensuring your fireplace is a positive element rather than an eye sore or under utilised element in your home. Fireplace design ideas vary widely, but no matter what your style, a free-standing or built in fireplace can become a stunning feature, adding comfort, style and value to a home.

But where do you begin your selection process?

Closed vs Open Fireplaces?

Quite simply, a cast iron closed system fireplace is up to 80% efficient in comparison to an open fireplace, which typically loses 90% of its heat straight up the chimney.

Aesthetically speaking…

While some prefer an open fire, practically and aesthetically your options are less varied than a closed system.Closed system, cast iron fire-places offer a timeless look which will fit with any interior, either modern or classic.

Good Advice For You

A Morsø fireplace is more than just a source of heat - it is an integral part of your living space, and an indelible asset to your home’s interior design.

A Morsø fireplace can last for decades, provided it is maintained properly. Maintenance includes some simple servicing of the fireplace before every firing season and some basic maintenance for winter use.

• It is important to ensure that the door of the fireplace is shut tight, which means that the sealing rope is not frayed and is in good condition. If the sealing rope is not intact, it will lead to a fake draft entering the firebox causing less efficient combustion that is difficult to control.

• Always check the fireproof bricks in the firebox. It is okay for the bricks to be cracked, but if they have started to crumble they must be replaced. If the bricks do not hold their original shape, the insulation in the firebox is reduced, and the combustion temperature becomes too low for efficient combustion.

• If you feel your fireplace needs a “face lift” to regain its former beauty, it can be easily achieved by applying some paint. Morsø markets accessories of maintenance products such as heat resistant, rustproof paint and fireplace polish.

• If you are having trouble keeping the glass in the door clean and free of soot, there are some guidelines you can follow. First, ensure that the firewood is dry, because burning of damp wood is one cause of soot on the glass and in the chimney. Another important thing to consider is the size of the logs. Firewood must be split so that the logs are not too large.

Ultimately, it is important to operate the air supply correctly. If there is too little air, the gasses from the wood are not burnt and lie on the glass as soot. Lack of air can also cause the combustion temperature to be too low, which results in soot in both the fireplace and chimney.

If you believe the combustion temperature is too low, you can check it by using a Morsø Flue Thermometer (below). When placed on the flue right above the fireplace, the temperature should be between 250ºC and 300ºC to achieve ideal combustion. If you already have soot on the glass, you can just clean it with the Morsø glass cleaner .
